Francis was born in 1182. 
When he was around 25, he renounced all his material possessions, and devoted himself to serving the poor.
Francis lived with lepers, fed them, and helped them heal their wounds.
He built his own church - stone by stone - from ruins of an old one.
He got his meals, collecting discarded vegetables, or working as a laborer, insisting to be paid with food rather than money. 
The Franciscan taught that Christ and the twelve apostles had no property.
